Knock Out Hunger

On the Saturday after Thanksgiving more than 200 volunteers came out for the Knock Out Hunger Border Battle. The food packing and supply drive event pitted West St. Paul against South St. Paul to see who could pack more food for local food shelves.

In the end, the two cities packed 30,720 meals. West St. Paul packed more, but local food shelves won.

We helped with the event planning—honestly just pitching in and supporting efforts that were already underway. On West St. Paul Reader we promoted the event with an announcement story and covered it with a student photographer.

The day of the event we showed up to help out in any way we were needed, and ended up being the official counter to determine who packed more boxes—an ideal role for an unbiased journalist.

For a first-time event, we had an incredible turnout and it was fun to see so many neighbors showing up to support a good cause.
