The Greatest Two Words I've Ever Heard
(Filed under: Random)Let me tell you the two greatest words I've ever heard: Solid Food. The Lexi Baby started eating stuff called "solid food" about 2 weeks ago. And she's messy. It gets on her face and her hands and her clothes. So, I have to pitch in a clean her up. And oh boy, do those solid foods taste good. From what I hear, this "solid food" thing is only going to get better and better. Now I just have to convince Speak that he really doesn't want to get in on this deal.

In the Spotlight Again
(Filed under: )I had another photoshoot today. I had to wear a dress, again, but at least for this shoot I was the star. This nice lady who works for Target thinks that I am a super-stud and she called my agent and requested me by name. When we got to the studio there were four other dogs there (and four cats, but that's a whole other story). They put me in that stupid dress, again, and sat me in the bed. Then they took my pictture with each of the other dogs. They were looking for the dog that complemented my good looks. I hope they pick the pictures of me and Greta because she was definintly the best looking of the group.
Oh and the cats. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA that was fun! We were at the studio, three (the two boston terriers were not allowed off their leashes because they were not able to keep their cool like the rest of us) of us were just hanging out, play ball, getting pet, munching on some treats and in walks my agent with her kid and for crates. I thought, oh man, how many of us are there going to be in this picture. Turns out she had cats. Do you know how much fun cats are when they are stuck in crates? If you stare at them they hiss, if you bark at them they try and growl, if you sniff at their crate they get all puffy and hiss some more. Okay, well maybe it wasn't as fun for the cats as it was for me and my pals, but what else are you going to do when you've got 4 cat crates lined up in front of you?

There are still only two of us
(Filed under: )Abby quit her job a couple weeks ago and yesterday was her last day of work. I was a little worried because when Kevin quit his job 3 years ago they went and got me. Then for no apparent reason whatsoever, they brought Mazie home. I've spent a solid year trying to teach her whose the boss around here and it's a lot of work.
When I heard that Abby had quit her job, I thought for sure they would go and get another puppy. Lucky for me, they just went out to dinner instead. I did not want to have to train another puppy.

Kill the Wabbit
(Filed under: Random)Mazie killed a rabbit today.
We haven't seen rabbits in the yard since she almost got one a few weeks ago, and today two of the fury little critters ventured into the yard and Mazie got the drop on them. Cornered, one of them bolted around Mazie and I and made it out through the chain-link fence. The other one wasn't so lucky and Mazie chomped down on its back.
I always wanted to play with the bunnies in the backyard. They never really wanted to play with me, but we at least tolerated each other. Then Mazie came along.
Kevin and Abby weren't so keen on Mazie getting second supper, so they pried her off the wounded little rabbit, which at this point was paralyzed from the middle down and screeching. They forced Mazie and I back inside and the little rabbit tried to follow its partner through the chain-link, but to no avail.
When Kevin went to put the rabbit out of its misery it was already dead.
So no rabbit supper tonight, but that's OK. I prefer larger meals (my food is made from bison), and I'm not sure I could eat a potential playmate anyway.
Though now that I've seen what Mazie can do, I'm starting to watch my back.

A Tale of Two Dogs
I made another greenback-generating appearance in the Target ad this week. No matter what the pink sweater vest says about me, I'm still a productive member of society.
Mazie, on the other hand, found half a squirrel to chew the other day. Nobody's quite sure what happened to the other half of the squirrel, but everybody's pretty certain Mazie didn't do it. She eats fast, but not that fast. And that would make her a what?
A scavenger.
She also spent yesterday trying to catch two big, fat pigeons. Now I've heard pigeon can be a delicacy, but c'mon. You actually have to catch them. Finding previously killed lunch doesn't count.
So go ahead, laugh at my cross-dressing, money-making fame. But while I'm sitting on a luxurious pillow and lapping bottled water Mazie is sitting in the dirt chewing on leftover squirrel intestines. Now who do you want sitting in your lap?

Speak the Dog Modeling Fairy
So Speak is pretty proud of himself for being paid to dress up like a girl. I'm not sure I get it. I tried the whole modeling thing. They were really nice to me and gave me lots of tasty food, but I don't think that's for me. I'd rather chase animals in the back yard.
OK, yesterday, there was this big fat rabbit sitting by the garage and I ran out to get him and he didn't see me coming so he didn't run until it was too late and I was on top of him before he could escape and I think I scared him really bad and I might have got a bit of fur but I don't remember because it happened so fast.
Mmm... rabbit.
So anyway, Speak is a model.
Yeah, but what he didn't tell you is last year he got to model some Halloween costumes. Like this fairy costume. But he also got to be a tiger. All summer I had to hear about how he got to be a tiger. Then when the costumes came out he didn't tell anybody else.
You know why? Because he looked like a fairy in that tiger costume. I think the "tiger" costume was more like a tiger skin coat.
Very lady-like yet again, Speak.
This year he went back to do more Halloween costume modeling and he came back bragging that he got to be a football player. And a pumpkin (he wasn't as thrilled with that one). I can't wait to see what kind of a powderpuff football player he gets to be.
And maybe it's just me, but I think I look a lot more lady-like in the fairy costume than Speak did. Of course it's hard to chase rabbits in all that get up, so it was just for Halloween.

(Filed under: Modeling)That's right, I'm back. We've had a bit of a drought since my last appearance, but the green is flowing again.

Snow Dogs
(Filed under: Video)Last month we had a late snowstorm with really deep snow and Speak and I had a chance to play. Kevin took some video and finally got around to putting it together. You can check it out on either Vimeo or You Tube.
I think I look pretty good.

Bark in the Park 2006
(Filed under: Dog News)On May 6th Abby and I are walking in the Bark in the Park walk/run again. Last year Mazie, Abby and I all walked—in the snow—to help raise money for the Humane Society. It was a long walk. A really long walk. Mazie was actually tired at the end of it. Not me though—after the walk, I wowed the crowed with my agility skills.
We're walking again this year to help rescue animals—like Mazie. Mazie was a shelter dog. Her mom and four other siblings were dropped off at the doorstep of a shelter in a Rubbermaid container. They were all flea-ridden, malnourished, and sick with worms. The shelter was able to treat Mazie and her family (all 6 of them) because people like you donated the money to pay for medication and vet visits. Then people like Abby and Kevin adopted the unwanted dogs like Mazie and gave them a good home where they were wanted.
OK, so we all know Mazie can be a huge pain in the butt sometimes. But I kind of like having an annoying little sister around. It’s much more fun to chase squirrels with her than by myself. She’s good at playing tug of war and the two of us have made barking at the mailman a form of art. Plus being the top dog doesn't count for much when you're the only dog in the house.
If you want to help other animals like Mazie get the care they need so they can find a home, too, then please sponsor us in the Bark in the Park walk. You can send a check made out to HSCA (Humane Society for Companion Animals) to Abby at 1119 Seminary Ave, St. Paul MN 55104 by May 1st.
Here’s where your money could go:
$15 – feeds a litter of kittens for a week
$35 – provides small animal (bunnies, hamsters, guinea pigs) food for a month
$75 – prepares a shelter dog for adoption (meds, exams, vaccines, grooming)
$125 – x-rays for shelter animals
$175 – emergency care for dogs hit by a car
Thanks for helping take care of our friends,
By the way – Mazie's a little sensitive about the whole shelter thing, so please don't start calling her a neglecterino or anything. Thanks!

Modeling Again
(Filed under: Modeling)Mazie and I went and got our headshots taken for another modeling company last Saturday. I think it went pretty well. They took five pictures of me, a couple sitting, a couple standing, one lying down, I was looking pretty good. Then it was Mazie's turn. They took one picture of her. Probably because she refused to hold still.
Yesterday the photographer called our house and, surprise, surprise, Target wants me to come in tomorrow for a photo shoot.

My Dog Had a Seizure
(Filed under: The Vet)Speak had a seizure today. And I don't mean he stole my rope and ran off with it. Well, he did that, too, but he also had a seizure. He seems fine now, but it's pretty scary stuff. He may try to fight me all the time and thinks he's all that, but I still like my (little) big brother.
It happened this afternoon when Speak was sitting in the front hall. Abby looked up and all of a sudden Speak wasn't walking on one front leg and one back leg and his head was shaking. Abby called him over and he responded, so he wasn't out of it, but he kept shaking. She picked him up and called Kevin and they tried calling the vet and rudely locked me in my kennel--apparently they didn't need the services of the only one in the house able to communicate with Speak.
After a few minutes Speak stopped shaking, jumped off the couch (apparently he had regained the use of his limbs), and ran up stairs--presumably to mock me for being locked in my kennel.
Abby called one of her dog trainer friends (I like them, their pockets smell like tasty) and it sounds like Speak will be all right. It could just be a fluke thing, unless it happens again--in which case Speak will have to go in for some tests. But for now he seems fine, soaking up all the attention he can get. Which makes me wonder if the whole thing was a ruse to steal attention away from the new puppy and get pampered the rest of the day. If it is a ruse I'm going to eat his breakfast tomorrow.

I Think I'll Keep Her
(Filed under: Sibling Rivalry)Okay, I know that Speak posted a statement saying that we wanted to give away the new puppy, but I'm officially changing my position on that. I like her. She can stay. Things haven't really changed all that much for me, except I have to do a few more odd jobs around here but they are pretty important jobs that they have entrusted to me - letting Abby and Kevin know when the puppy cries, barking at people, squirrels, leaves, shadows that may sneak in the house and bother the puppy, lick her toes while she is eating so she stays awake.
I think Speak feels the same way I do. I don't know if he likes her as much as I do, but he's pretty happy because they still let him sleep in the bed for naptime, he still gets fed everyday and he still gets pet on a regular basis.
So just to make sure things are clear: If you want her, you have to get through me first.

Does Anyone Want a Puppy?
(Filed under: Sibling Rivalry)Remember about 9-10 months ago when Kevin and Abby brought Mazie home? She was kind of a pain and she wrecked all my toys and tried to bite me all the time, but eventually I got used to her. Okay, so now Kevin and Abby keep talking about this new puppy they are going to bring home soon. I don't think I've really seen one before - it sounds like a pretty rare breed, something called a "baby".
Mazie and I got together the other night and realized that we do not need another dog in the house. Especially one that gets it's own room, a whole pile of clothes, toys we are not allowed to touch and it's own bed in Abby and Kevin's room. Oh, and it's crate is taking up all the room in the backseat of the car so they keep talking about how we will have to stay home when they go on trips.
All of their friends seem pretty excited about this new puppy so we thought we would just let everyone know that if they want it, they can e-mail us and let us know. ( Just don't tell Abby and Kevin that we said you can have it.)
