The Blogging Church: Sharing the Story of Your Church Through Blogs by Bailey, Brian and Storch, Terry

Filed under: Business | Buy on Amazon

It's your basic how-to book for pastors or church staff considering a blog.

My biggest complaint with the book is that it doesn't seem to read that well. I had a hard time putting my finger on it, but it was just hard to read.

I also disagreed with the advice that bloggers should never have ads on their blog (an admittedly minor point covering less than half a page). The authors argue that "you're personally profiting from your role in the church" and ads will have a "treacherous" effect on your motivation. They argue that "free money" will corrupt you, but I think they miss the point. The money isn't free--it's hard earned, as anyone who can make money from their blogging will tell you.

Certainly there are considerations if you're going to have ads (blocking potentially offensive ads, making sure you don't be come motivated purely by profit, etc.), but swearing off ads--or any sort of payment for blogging--denies the inherent value in blogging.

OK, I'm done complaining now. It really does cover some great stuff on blogging for the church and includes tons of interviews with big name bloggers (Disclaimer: I should probably say that I'm interviewed in the book as a part of my work with Church Marketing Sucks and our site is used as an example several times, though I'm definitely not one of the "big name" bloggers).
