Teaching a Stone to Talk by Dillard, Annie
Filed under: Non-Fiction | Buy on Amazon
This is a great introduction to the writing of Annie Dillard.
It will prepare you for the oddity and complexity of Holy the Firm and Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. Teaching a Stone to Talk is a collection of bite-size essays. "An Expedition to the Pole" is one of my favorites, where she compares polar exploration to attending church. "On a Hill Far Away" is also good, although I'm partial to Dillard's critiques of Christianity. I bumped into a former student of Dillard's while reading this book on the bus, and the man recommended "Total Eclipse," also another one of the better essays.
