A Live Coal in the Sea by L'Engle, Madeleine
Filed under: Fiction | Buy on Amazon
It sounds like a soap opera, unfolds like a mystery novel, and reads like a classic.
When young Raffi is upset by her unknown past she goes to her grandmother for the family's troubled history. As the story of several generations unravels, you catch glimpses of amazing love, mercy, and grace. L'Engle does an amazing job weaving in the story of God without being overbearing. The grandmother marries a minister but the image of Christianity is more subtle than you'll find in any "Christian" novel.
