Nickel Creek's Sean Watkins on the Christian Music Mafia

"I'm so sick of sugar-coated songs from the Christian perspective. One of the most comforting and inspiring lines to me is from the last chorus of 'Come Thou Fount' where it says, 'Prone to wander, Lord I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love.' Not many un-watered-down songs make it through the filter of the Christian music industry mafia these days."

-Nickel Creek guitarist Sean Watkins (Source: On Religion, Oct. 19, 2005, as quoted from Sean's online journal)

Amen! There are no "Christian" bands. In the Last Days, musicians' guitars and keyboards and drums will NOT come with them to heaven. And lyrics ... sure you can say "Jesus" is your song and have the word "Holy" in your title, but songs that don't - songs that just talk about the beauty or ugliness of this life - those are just as valid for God-fearing men. And this because for followers of Christ, He is (or at least should be) fused with every fiber, every ounce of their lives. There should be no part that God has not consumed and therefore the lyrics written in reflection of this life will also reflect God's truth. What's the conclusion? The Bible contains the infallable words of God (and is infinitely far above rock and roll), but we're putting God in a small sub-cultural box to say the power of His truth stops at the doors of your church.

OK, Come Thou Fount is like my favorite song. There is just so much honesty to the lyrics that you can relate to it from the beginning. You don't have to cut through any fake clee-shey (I have no idea how to spell that word)imagery to understand th songs core. It's really good! Chris, I think you are dead on.
