Willa Ford on Gay Marriage

"Let me state that I'm not gay and I am a faithful Christian, but I feel that by throwing the Bible around and targeting the gay and lesbian population, we as a country are doing the opposite of what we are supposed to be learning from the Bible."

-Pop singer Willa Ford in an issue of gay and lesbian magazine, The Advocate covering the music community's response to gay marriage. (Source: The Advocate, April 27, 2004)

it's kind of a chicken and egg question. in my largely gay friendly neighbourhood the anti-evangelical christian bumper stickers, slogans and attitudes border on hate speech. here in the blue states there is an arrogant smugness that ridicules bible quoters as part of the VRWC (Vast Right Wing Conspiracy). i mean who is hating who here? even more telling, who has the actual power in the culture industries, you know the folks who create the cultural artifacts that actually influence folks--hollywood, madison ave, academia? it wouldn't be the good dr dobson, know matter how hard he tries.

What exactly does "targeting" mean? I'm not sure what that's supposed to be except as a synonym for "paying attention to" with a negative connotation thrown in. I'm not trying to shoot them, I'm trying to show them Truth.

The thing is, the most unloving thing I could do would be to say absolutely nothing and allow them to continue unfettered by horrible people like me who have opinions about how others should live. But if I said nothing, they would all applaud me and say that I was very "tolerant." Well, I don't want to be tolerant. I want to be godly.

I agree with Josh -- targeting them how? Should we just let the homosexual community wallow in ignorance?

On the other hand...our "love" doesn't always translate well. We do need to be careful, very careful, in our approach.
