Kurt Busch Bumps & Wins at Bristol

It was a typical day at Bristol with sheet metal bending all the way to the end when Kurt Busch tapped former teammate Matt Kenseth for the win. Kenseth was slowed up by Dale Jarrett who was fighting to stay on the lead lap. Kenseth couldn't get around him and Busch lost patience. Kenseth lost two more positions, but ended up finishing third after putting the same bump on Jeff Gordon, who ended up 21st. Of course Gordon also but the bump on somebody, sending the lap down car of Martin Truex, Jr., around. Truex, Jr., came back at Gordon a few laps later, roughing him up until Tony Stewart tapped him and Truex, Jr. careened off the wall on his way to a 38th place finish.

And those were just the highlights in a typical day at Bristol. You gotta love this place.

When the smoke cleared it was a good day for some drivers who haven't had luck lately, including winner Busch, second place Kevin Harvick, fourth place Carl Edwards and fifth place Bobbie Labonte. Some drivers didn't fare so well, including Gordon, Casey Mears--who had trouble all day and finished 25th--and former points leader Jimmie Johnson who had early tire trouble, hit the wall, and finished a number of laps down in 30th. And a few drivers continued their strong seasons, including third place Kenseth, sixth place Mark Martin, tenth place Kasey Kahne and 11th place Dale Earnhardt, Jr., who despite not being much of a threat this year is sitting in sixth place in points. Tony Stewart even managed to get back in the top 10 for points with a 12th place finish and leading the most laps.

I always love looking at the points and seeing who's got what it takes. So far Matt Kenseth is on top with an average finish of 6.8. Jimmie Johnson was riding high until today, dropping to 7.2 from an amazing average finish of 2.5. Mr. Consistency Mark Martin has an average finish of 7th, but Kasey Kahne tops 'em all with an average finish of 6th and is currently only eight points behind leader Kenseth. If he can keep up the consistency Kahne could be an unexpected contender this year. Though as tight as last year's standings were, it would do him well to rack up some more bonus points for leading laps.
