Christian Rock Band Petra Retires

The Christian rock band Petra will call it quits after more than 30 years of music. In that time the band scored four Grammys for 1990's Beyond Belief, 1991's Unseen Power, 1993's Wake-Up Call and 2000's Double Take. They were one of the ground breaking Christian rock bands, and even pre-dated the worship explosion with 1989's Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out.

During middle school my favorite rock band was Petra, and though my tastes have since changed, I present my top Petra songs (of course I'm pretty biased to their music from the late 1980s to mid 1990s; I'm not much of a fan of their earlier or later stuff).

Top 5 (in no particular order):
"Beyond Belief" (from Beyond Belief)
"This Means War" (from This Means War)
"Dance" (from Unseen Power)
"Sleeping Giant" (from Wake-Up Call)
"Just Reach Out" (from Wake-Up Call)

Honorable Mention
"Jesus, Jesus Glorious One" (from Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out)
"Praying Man" (from Wake-Up Call)
"Somebody's Gonna Praise His Name" (from On Fire)
"He Came, He Saw, He Conquered" (from This Means War)
"Grave Robber" (from Not of This World)
"Right Place" (from No Doubt)
"I Waited For the Lord" (from Petra Praise 2: We Need Jesus)
"Take Me In" (from Petra Praise: The Rock Cries Out)
"The Coloring Song" (from Never Say Die)

Top Petra Covers (from Never Say Dinosaur):
"Road to Zion" by Sixpence None the Richer
"I Can Be Friends" With You by MxPx
"Rose Colored Stained Glass Windows" by Jars of Clay

Comments

This Means War is actually the first CD I ever purchased, and I was really into the Beyond Belief album. So I'd agree with the title tracks from both of those albums being on their "best of" list.

They started losing me with Unseen Power (I think Hand on My Heart is one of their worst songs ever). By the time Wake Up Call came out, my taste had changed and their style had not.

And that's always been my biggest criticism of Petra - there seemed to be little artistic and creative evolution during their last 15 years.

I come to bury Petra, not to praise them.

Dave, your comments are interesting, especially since most Petra fans say exactly the opposite. Many say they stopped listening to Petra because the band changed TOO MUCH from 1995 on.

It's too bad folks stopped following them. if you haven't checked out "Jekyll & Hyde," you should. It's an awesome album. Too bad they didn't record a follow-up.
