Star Wars: The Clone Wars Trailer

The trailer for the latest installment of Star Wars, the animated Clone Wars is now available. The film will be in theaters August 15, 2008.

Yep, George Lucas is back with an animated feature from the Star Wars universe, this time telling a story that takes place between Episodes II and III, which will set up the upcoming Clone Wars TV series. If this all sounds oddly familiar, that's probably because the original Clone Wars animated TV series came out in 2003. Apparently this time it's 3D instead of 2D.

Rehasing Movie Trailers

Editing and music are everything. You can completely change the tone and feeling by changing the cuts or the music. You've probably seen the rehashed trailers for The Shining and Back to the Future, but now TBS is doing the same for their promotion of their showing of The Lord of the Rings.

"It Sucks To Be Frodo" has to be one of the best, simply for the sake of originality, though the Frodo/Sam as lovers trailer is more well done. And the Gollum trailer has the makings of a great gross out comedy. (link via Kottke)

And while we're talking about rehashes, how about Buffy the Vampire Slayer as Friends (link via InFuze).

X-Men 3 Trailer

The trailer for X-Men 3 is now up. Go check it out in all of its mutated, Patrick Stewart goodness.

There's something about the X-Men movies I really get into. I think it might be the ensemble cast and the fact that we don't have to focus on one self-involved weenie (I liked Spiderman 2, but sometimes Peter Parker is just a weenie). We have a whole cast of characters going through similar--yet completely different--transitions. We're not limited to one or even four heroes. And it also gives a plausible explanation to continually introduce new characters. Their can only be so many radioactive accidents to create all those villains.

Anyway, May 26--I know where I'll be.

Pirates of the Caribbean 2 Trailer

Jack is back. The trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is now available, the first of at least two sequels which will come out in the summer of 2006 and 2007.

Pretty impressive for a movie based on a ride.

Steve Taylor's The Second Chance Trailer

The Second Chance trailerSteve Tayler makes his directorial debut (finally) with The Second Chance, a film that explores racism and the church. The trailer is now available and it hardly looks like the typical Christian movie. What else would you expect from Steve Taylor?

The movie stars musician Michael W. Smith, which sounds like an odd choice, but from the trailer he looks like he might be able to pull it off. For more on The Second Chance, read an interview with Steve Taylor.

Speaking of Michael W. Smith, have you heard about the tribute album? The Ultimate Music Makeover: The Songs of Michael W. Smith features Stryper performing "Friends," Shaun Groves doing "Rocketown," and All Star United on "Go West Young Man." Um, no comment.

A Scanner Darkly Trailer

Whoa. You can say that again. A Scanner Darkly is an upcoming Richard Linklater film based on a story by Philip K. Dick and starring Keanu Reeves. But the best part is that it was made using rotoscoping, where animation is drawn over live-action film. Yeah, funkadelic.

Check it out.

The Island Trailer

One of the most promising trailers shown during Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (well, aside from the obvious) was a sci-fi flick starring Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson: The Island. Or at least I thought so. I heard scoffs on either side of me, but the Orwellian action flick looked pretty cool. We'll see come July 22.

Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith Trailer

Harry Potter: Goblet of Fire Trailer

The teaser trailer for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is now available. It's short and sweet, but does give a nice glimpse at the beginning of how the characters have grown up from the first film to the fourth one. They're definitely not kids anymore (though they better hurry up and film the next three or they won't be teenagers anymore). (link via InFuze)

Chronicles of Narnia Trailer

After all the hype The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe trailer is finally available.

The action looks pretty amazing, though it appears to be trying to compete with Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. I wonder if my friend Neal is right: Disney's going for epic and it's all wrong. This is probably sacrilege, but even if they get the feel wrong and it's just not a good adaptation, it still looks like a fun movie. (link via InFuze)

You can also see an older featurette on the Weta Workshop's special effects involvement.

Narnia Trailer Coming Saturday

The media is buzzing over the trailer for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe which will debut across the world on Saturday, May 7 during ABC's showing of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. It's a lot of hype for what amounts to, well, hype.

And beyond hype, there's also a lot of pressure. Pressure to make buckets of cash for Disney, pressure to keep the story in line with C.S. Lewis' treasured book, pressure to live up to that other fantasy adaptation, Peter Jackson's film version of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings.

"You ultimately can only make something that appeals to your own sensibilities," says Auckland-born [director Andrew] Adamson, whose parents were both associate missionaries in Papua New Guinea. "I am not making religion an issue one way or another. It's a story about family. People should take from it what they want to take from it."
