Billy Graham Movies: World Wide Pictures
Long before The Passion of the Christ there was World Wide Pictures, Billy Graham's movie division. They've been making Christian movies since 1953 and Christianity Today recently covered the success of Billy Graham's movies over the past 50 years.
It includes the change of strategy that had WWP shift from making movies for church viewings to the direct to video market, which resulted in selling the company's Burbank studio, just a block away from the Walt Disney Studio. It also covers their more recent strategy of offering a limited theatrical release and then airing the movies on TV in place of a Billy Graham crusade—a strategy that often proved more effective than televising the crusades.
What they fail to mention is that WWP's latest strategy has grinded to a halt. 2004's Last Flight Out never had a theatrical release and WWP doesn't have any movies currently in the works (a fact the article does mention). Instead WWP is focusing on flogging their library of titles on DVD.
Part of that decline could be due to a lack of quality that WWP didn't want to deal with:
[WWP director of operations from 1992-2004, Barry] Werner recalls some of the challenges World Wide faced as it looked for independent contractors who could produce good, watchable, evangelistic films. Some producers objected to the studio's basic formula. "They'd say, 'Cinematically, that doesn't work. Billy Graham preaching on screen doesn't work.' Well, hello, who's paying for this? So we had a challenge to come up with independent producers and still have an evangelistic event."
The article finishes with the mixed reviews WWP movies have received compared to the estimated 2 million conversions the films prompted.
What I think is most interesting about these Billy Graham movies is their ability to operate completely under the radar. While many Christians were railing against Hollywood, Billy Graham was in the center of Hollywood making movies. When Christian movies first started to make a dent, nobody mentioned the 50-year history of Billy Graham movies or noticed the current limited theatrical release of Billy Graham movies. And while major studios are worried about online piracy, World Wide Pictures has 12 movies available online in their entirety (see list below). I can only guess no one cares about their online offerings because no one wants to watch an entire movie at such a low resolution. Perhaps a full blown download or a better resolution would attract more attetion, but it's still a ground-breaking move that gets no attention.
Paradoxically, now that The Passion of the Christ has spawned a resurgence of Christian movies, World Wide Pictures has nothing in the works.
