I just couldn't get past the feeling that this story was made from scraps and shreds of every other epic fantasy story.

Certainly that's the case with every story, but it just felt excessive here. The Lord of the Rings movies were just too recent, the 'death of the uncle' scene felt too much like Star Wars, and Aragorn/Eragon?

Perhaps I should read the book and give it a fighting chance, but the movie really didn't wow me.

The criticism you're leveling is the same I had of the book, so don't expect it to be any better. The book also greatly suffers from being written by a teenager and edited by what seems to be no one. It's as if someone thought it was precious that a teenager was writing that they didn't have the heart to tell him that a. he was a total hack, and b. his book could be half as long.
